Future Engineering

The future of product development is digital, networked and interdisciplinary. While today's work is still often done using Excel and email, modern apps and collaborative platforms will be commonplace in the engineering world of tomorrow. Virtual design spaces and 3D visualisations of the product are replacing the traditional meeting with PowerPoint presentations. Where today a lot of time is spent optimising one's own limited scope of tasks, the engineering of the future controls a whole reign of user-friendly tools and intelligent algorithms enabling networking far beyond one's own area of competence. It is no longer necessary to search for errors or anomalies in data, codes and models. A recommender system ensures an efficient preselection and a continuous integration & testing pipeline provides daily quality control. Digital skills, a customer-centred mindset and an agile approach to work are increasingly taking the place of pure technical knowledge and are being taught to the developers of tomorrow in coaching sessions and change communication at an early stage. In the end, more time is left for what should be most important - the development of innovative ideas and high-quality products or services. We call it Future Engineering.

Cloud Transformation

Cloudification is currently a hot topic, and not for nothing. In a networked world, distributed organization and the provision of data and software are essential in virtually all industries and offer numerous added values for end users. The challenge for our customers' development departments is to bring both existing and new software into the cloud, to use it there in the most integrated way possible and to make it available.

For TWT, this means the orientation of all software-oriented development disciplines or those controlled and influenced by software development towards the cloud. Various infrastructure providers enable both data retention in the cloud and the provision of algorithms on this data. Cloud-based initiatives such as GAIA-X aim at cross-domain collaborative data use under trusted terms of use, enabling end-users to benefit from data fusion across providers and globally.

TWT - the right partner for this topic

We also see cloud transformation as a way of exploiting simulation capabilities - previously unthinkable on-board due to the lack of computing capacity - with almost unlimited scalability. In addition to the new development of cloud algorithms and services, TWT transfers conventional simulations, more extensive co-simulations and AI algorithms to the cloud and thus renders them usable for real world operations, for example with regard to a digital twin.

Thanks to our interdisciplinary staff and our versatile research activities in various technologies and industries, we master a broad engineering and IT portfolio. This makes us a predestined partner company for projects aimed at implementing networked, automated and autonomous software functionalities on cloud environments in a wide range of applications.

Our range of services

Cloud transformation also means increased network traffic and, especially in the field, requires new telecommunication technologies such as 5G to ensure the necessary latencies, bandwidths and quality of service. Cloud-based functionalities and algorithms such as those developed by TWT must be capable of processing these data volumes on existing infrastructure.

We meet these challenges in a variety of ways:

  • We analyse your business processes and conceptualise your business logic for their implementation in a cloud-based environment.
  • We take care of migrating your processes, methods and tools to the cloud.
  • We develop the functionalities and algorithms in the cloud to leverage the diverse data sources accessible in the cloud.
  • We take care of the implementation of your IT requirements in common and customized cloud solutions (e.g. AWS, MS Azure, Hybrid Clouds, ...) with the direct involvement of our established partnerships with global cloud infrastructure providers.
  • Software development in the context of Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery, of both on-board and off-board applications is also part of our broad range of services.
  • For you and together with you, we further develop cloud technologies and software development methods, as well as their targeted applications within the scope of research projects.

Autonomous Driving

The automotive industry is currently undergoing a phase of great change. In addition to the increasing outfitting of vehicles with electrical components, more and more computer technology is finding its way into vehicles, facilitating a significant improvement in driver assistance systems and automated driving functions. These functions can significantly improve comfort, efficiency and safety. However, before highly automated driving functions can be released for operation, they must be verified and validated in extensive tests in order to prove their reliability, especially with regard to safety, according to socially accepted standards.

Data is the new oil – In the wake of digitalisation, there are almost limitless fields of application for data science and machine learning. Using a wide variety of algorithms, the analysis of huge amounts of data offers the potential to gain insights into behavioural patterns that open up a range of new opportunities for humans. Aspects such as modelling and forecasting maintenance and quality problems, continuous learning from data and the associated making of optimum decisions for autonomous driving or simulating real-life scenarios represent major challenges that need to be surmounted. At the same time, however, it also offers great potential, which we would like to exploit for you.

In projects, our broad expertise allows us, among other things, to move in the right direction already at an early stage by defining the so-called value proposition. In order to fulfil this proposition, a profound understanding of the available data and the correlations is essential, which is achieved by exploring the data and visualising the relevant correlations. The understanding of the data is enriched with expert knowledge, gathered both internally and from customers, for example in workshops. This way, it can be ensured that the use of data science generates added value and that existing knowledge is neither replaced nor lost.

Our range of services

An appropriate selection of methods and models is made possible due to our data scientists' specialist knowledge, enabling us to choose from a wide range of options:

  • We find the ideal balance between the application of classical statistical methods as well as neural networks and deep learning.
  • With our keen understanding of your needs as a customer and the expectations associated therewith, we can get the best out of your data and use the insights to target your objectives.

Virtual Experience

Are you familiar with the following situations? You have developed a really high-quality system and want to show the value added to the customer you are sitting in front of? Or you have designed a sustainable function for your product and have to go into a management decision making meeting with it? Perhaps you have also experienced that the diversity of variants in your development area has exploded, yet your test experts are supposed to evaluate as many configurations as possible in real terms? Or you have recently started to work in networked teams across America, Asia and Africa, but still need to exchange development updates as interactively as possible? A solution to many of these challenges is to switch from real to virtual experience, meaning that you can still experience, test and present your product "in the flesh", but it no longer needs to be available as real hardware. Instead, a digital twin that can be experienced live takes its place.

For more than ten years, we have been developing suitable solutions and methods for integrating digital twins into the product lifecycle, thus reducing hardware costs and aligning product evaluation more closely to the requirements of users and customers. In this process, we like to rely on existing technologies such as the Unreal Game Engine or existing test procedures at your company in order to develop further methods and tools for transforming a traditional product experience into a virtual one in accordance with your requirements. Our strength lies in particular in the understanding of technical processes, data interfaces, automation and multi-physics modelling. This idea gave rise to our product GenVis (General Visualisation), which we initially designed for the virtual experience of flow simulations in a 3D world and the corresponding derivation of presentations suitable for the management.

Our range of services

  • We analyse your requirements and develop a concept for Virtual Experience.
  • We enable photorealistic visualizations of your simulations and products.
  • Our services also include the automated preparation of complex CAx data.
  • We implement interfaces and user interfaces for integration into your processes.
  • We create Proofs of Concepts (PoCs) and demonstrators, e.g. featuring 3D glasses.

Worldwide, the number of electric vehicles on the road is increasing rapidly - some manufacturers will soon only have electric vehicles in their line-ups. At the same time, pioneers at Lilium, Volocopter and many other emerging companies are working on electrified options for urban and regional aviation.

And with good reason. Without a strong cross-sectoral reduction of emitted greenhouse gases, climate change will progress unchecked and threaten human, plant and animal habitats around the world. Electrification makes it possible to use the electricity generated from renewable sources instead of fossil fuels for mobility, thus massively reducing the greenhouse gases emitted. The society's new sensitivity to the issue of climate protection and the political promotion of electromobility through subsidies have recently led to a genuine boom in the market for electric vehicles.

Learn more about E-Mobility

What makes the topic of e-mobility so important?

The transition to electrified drives poses massive challenges for entire industries. Car manufacturers are working at full speed to develop new, profitable and feasible vehicle concepts. In the shortest possible time, they are trying to ensure that the new vehicles meet their customers' high expectations. Technological development must be integrated into the supply chains and the production capacities for the new vehicles and components must be expanded accordingly. The shift in primary value creation from the internal combustion engine to the battery is bringing a lot of turmoil to an established industry.

The availability and reliability of a suitable charging infrastructure in public spaces is a key element for a positive e-mobility experience. To this end, a sufficiently powerful charging infrastructure must be established in urban areas and along the transport axes to cater for the supply of electric vehicles at all times. There are numerous infrastructure solutions for buses and trucks; technologies based on fuel cells have also a lot of promising potential for the future.

Convenient e-mobility services help to make the e-mobility experience an even more positive one. Ideally, a driver will find a free charging station within his/her remaining range at the push of a button in a matter of seconds - across countries and without any compatibility or financing problems. At the same time, the additional electricity consumption requires an expansion of the supply networks, both in the volume of electricity generation and in the regional infrastructure.

For vehicle owners, electric vehicles offer an exceptional driving experience - both in terms of the acceleration behaviour/noise and the vibration characteristics. Exhaust fumes and poor air quality are a thing of the past. Vehicle integration into a smart home with its own power generation and local battery storage allows for autonomy and cost optimisation.

Model Based System Engineering

The systems for implementing advanced product functionality are becoming increasingly complex. This applies in particular to the automotive development and its underlying traffic engineering, but it is also highly relevant in automation technology with approaches such as Industry 4.0, in the healthcare sector with its innovative digitalised health products, as well as in aerospace industry. Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) offers an elegant and visionary approach to ensure that your systems are designed in such a way that they can be verified and validated and that they sustainably fulfil the desired market-oriented functionality and the required quality characteristics. MBSE puts the initial phase of product development - specification and design - at the centre. The aim is to carry out specification and design on the basis of machine-readable and machine-interpretable models, thus implementing, validating and releasing systems consistently and end-to-end in terms of information technology and, in particular, making the results highly available and reusable throughout the entire product life cycle. MBSE provides the basis for every virtual product development strategy!
